Learning outside the classroom

In our April 2024 GreenSchools article, we described students in Mpigi planting trees and tending school gardens. The work brought environmental learning into activities students could take part in themselves: preparing ground, planting and caring for what they had grown.

The article’s photograph showed Omuto staff and students at a tree planting activity at Kikunyu Infant Primary School in Mpigi.

A shared responsibility

The account focused on the group work involved in looking after trees and gardens. Students took part in preparing garden beds and caring for shared projects, with opportunities to observe plants through changing weather and growing conditions.

This was practical environmental education: students working together in their own school grounds. The original article records Omuto’s observations from that period of the programme.
